This work presents a nonlinear multi-scale framework for shear-deformable shell elements and its application to the delamination analysis of layered composites. This model is based on the second-order computational homogenisation, and the benchmark results are produced from concurrent FE2 simulations. This work demonstrates that the multi-scale plugin developed here can enhance the capability of a conventional shell element, enabling it to be used for the progressive delamination analysis of composites. The benchmarks studied include the delamination of layered composites under bending and buckling loads, in which the multi-scale models yield good accuracy when compared with direct numerical simulations. The framework is fully nonlinear, with geometric nonlinearity at both coarse and fine scales, and is implemented in Abaqus/Standard.
